Déclin vertigineux des religieux et religieuses En avril dernier, le journal québecois Le Devoir consacrait une enquête à l’extinction de plus en plus évidente des congrégations religieuses dans la Belle Province en particulier et au Canada en général – l’âge avancé des religieux et religieuses permettant désormais de prévoir, à vue humaine, la quasi-disparition des instituts de vie consacrée dans le pays d’ici une génération. “Ce déclin est occidental, vertigineux et inéluctable. À leur zénith, dans les années 1960, les congrégations du Québec comptaient près de 50 000 membres. Six décennies plus tard, elles rassemblent moins de 8000 personnes, dont la moitié sont âgées de plus de 85 ans. Poussée par la vieillesse, l’érosion des congrégations s’accélère, selon les données de la Conférence religieuse canadienne (CRC). Entre 2015 et 2020, la CRC recensait 3578 décès au sein des congrégations du pays, soit la perte de 30 % de leur effectif en seulement cinq ans. Pendant ce temps, 195 personnes faisaient leur entrée en religion. Dix-huit décès, donc, pour chaque nouvelle arrivée. « Je ne crois pas que ce soit possible de renverser ce déclin, pense Jean-Michel Bigou, adjoint à la direction des communications pour la CRC.
